With the latest trailer for Across the Spider-verse being released this week, two of Sony’s most recent Marvel efforts collide in the first of my 2023 set reviews. LEGO® Marvel continues to impress with a steady stream of new sets continuing to be released. Their inspiration comes from many different places and this particular set is inspired by the wider Marvel universe. Although the lead character is Spider-Man stand-in Miles Morales, a certain meme invoking living vampire also makes his first minifigure appearance, so without further ado, it’s morbin’ time, I mean it’s time to take a look at set 76244: Miles Morales vs. Morbius.

With Marvel Studios’ cinematic universe containing to inspire many LEGO Marvel sets, others seek their inspiration from the wider Marvel Universe. The two characters featured in this set are part of Sony’s slate of Marvel content, although not directly related to a particular film or game. Miles Morales has become a key Marvel hero since first being introduced in 2011. He has since starred in Sony Animation’s Spider-verse films and a PlayStation game. Morbius has a much longer history, after first being introduced in the Spider-Man comics back in the early 70s. The character has become infamous more recently thanks to his own feature film released this year. Despite inspiring the fictional catchphrase “It’s Morbin’ Time!’ capturing fans’ imaginations, the film wasn’t a success, but at least it inspired the character to make its first appearance in minifigure form.
As with many of the Marvel sets, in particular, the Spider-Man-themed ones their subject matter is quite strange. A superhero with the ability to swing through the air on webs, climb buildings and harness the power of electricity doesn’t really need anything else to take on the bad guys. As exciting as the powers are they would make for a very boring LEGO experience. So this set features a rather cool-looking car. Of course, it’s inspired by Miles’ Spider-Man outfit and is largely constructed with black and red elements. This colour scheme works really well and I particularly like how the car is sort of framed with red plates.
There are a couple of nice visual treats on the car. They include a printed slope for the front of the car, I was quite surprised the set lacked any stickers. The front of the car almost has the appearance of a spider’s head with a couple of pronged bonnet plates looking like fangs and two sets of headlights, representing a Spider’s multiple eyes. The transparent red canopy perfectly suits the colour scheme and style of the vehicle. I also like that Miles’ electrical powers are incorporated with a large transparent blade jutting out the rear of the car.
Although the car will appeal to younger can, at whom this set is aimed, older LEGO fans will most likely be attached to the set’s two minifigures characters. Miles has appeared in a number of different sets and in this one, he’s in his basic Spidey suit. As with Spider-Man is hard to vastly change the appearance of the character, however, this is a new version of Miles, with a slight tweak to his suit’s design. Miles also includes various web accessories in transparent blue to represent his bioelectrical powers. Morbius is a fun little minifigure. He features two faces, both suitably vampiric. As is the slightly open-shirted torso. I like the use of the Doc Brown hair, recoloured in black, it suits the character better than a longer style would. Moribus also includes two chemical beakers, one red to represent the artificial blood and purple which I assume is the vampire antibody serum.
Review Round-up
Regardless of the need for any version of Spider-Man to have a car, it’s still a cool car. The little details dotted around the set such as the printed bonnet, transparent canopy, spider-like frontage and hidden spray paint cans; offer something unique. I’m no expert on the older Marvel history but I’m pretty sure Miles and Morbius aren’t known for their rivalry. I assume the infamous rise of Morbius thanks to the recent film is the sole reason for the inclusion of the character in this set. Despite seemingly odd link-up, it’s always nice to get new characters in minifigure-form.
