76145: Eternals’ Aerial Assault Set Review

As the Eternals arrive in the cinemas this week, it’s the perfect opportunity to take a look at the new LEGO® Marvel sets based on the latest chapter of the MCU. Just as Shang-Chi introduced us to new heroes and powers, Eternals will introduce an entire new super-powered species of heroes. There are four LEGO sets based on the film and across them, you can gather together the Eternals and build their villainous foe, the Deviants. For the first of the Eternals set reviews, it’s time to take a look at the smallest set in the range. This includes a brick-built Deviant and two members of the Eternals.

The focus of most of the Eternals sets is the battle between the Deviants and the Eternals. Two super-powered races were created by Celestials. This is perfectly suited for a LEGO set as you get both heroes and villains in one box. The Deviants are mutated creatures that have remained dormant underground for centuries. The snap carried out by the Avengers to undo the one done by Thanos, causes the Deviants to emerge and force the Eternals to protect Earth from them.

As the Deviants are mutated, they have vastly different appearances and the one included in this set is a small anamorphic winged creature. Admittedly it’s a little tricky to describe, but it reminds me a little of the Egyptian god Anubis. So it has a dog-like head, claws and werewolf-like legs. Obviously, the big distraction from the traditional appearance of Anubis is a pair of wings. This uses a series of cool shimmering pearlescent elements. Which really adds to the otherworldly feel of the Deviants. The colour scheme is a bit erratic but that also matches the monstrous appearance of the Deviant. There’s an odd mix of stickered elements and printed ones. I say odd as some of the elements which have stickers on them also have the exact same piece but with print on them. In an ideal world, there would be no stickers in LEGO sets but they do add necessary detail to the creature.

Another nice thing about the Eternals sets is the fact they need to include a lot of Minifigures in order to complete the Eternals line-up. Normally a set of this size would normally only include a single Minifigure, instead, you’ll find two – Sprite and Ikaris. This is the only set to include Sprite, who is portrayed as a child in the movie. So her Minifigure uses the shorter fixed legs. Her costume looks nice, with great print detail despite the Eternals outfits being quite simplistic compared to other super heroes. Her hair could have been a little better and doesn’t really match the on-screen character.

Poor hair seems to be a trait of this particular set as the colour chosen for Ikaris is terrible. The character is played by Richard Madden, who has dark brown hair. So for some very, very odd reason, an orange hairpiece has been given to his Minifigure. Despite the poorly chosen hair, his outfit is almost quite impressive, with great print detail and at least the bodies of both characters are far more impressive than their hair.
