75334: Obi-Wan Kenobi vs. Darth Vader Set Review

Disney+ is fast becoming the source for a number of LEGO® sets, in particular, Star Wars ones. Some of the upcoming new LEGO Star Wars sets take their inspiration from the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi. After Order 66, the Jedi are in hiding, hunted by a band of ruthless Inquisitors. Obi-Wan takes up residence on the desert planet of Tatooine, where he keeps watch over a young Luke Skywalker. He’s soon called upon to help off-planet, where he learns of Anakin’s survival and his new guise of Darth Vader. This set is inspired by Episode III of the Disney+ series and the first rematch between Vader and Kenobi on Mapuzo. Here’s a look at the new LEGO Star Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi Vs. Darth Vader set.

The set is spread over three numbered steps which translates to four bags. There are no stickers in the set and it includes the iffy new instruction booklet design. As briefly touched upon in my intro, the set is inspired by the moment Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi meet for the first time since their Mustafar duel, on the Empire-controlled mining planet of Mapuzo. After Ben and Leia are met by Imperial Officer and Jedi sympathiser, Tala Durith, they plot their escape through ‘The Path’ an underground network set up to help the Jedi and other Force-sensitives. Kenobi soon senses Vader’s presence and leads him away to allow Tala to escape with Leia.

Unwilling to fight Vader, Obi-Wan is soon flanked by the Dark Lord of the Sith and his Garrison of Stormtroopers. As Vader ignites a patch of Vintrium crystals, he grabs Obi-Wan using the Force and pulls him into the inferno before Tala arrives and helps Obi-Wan escape with assistance from loader Droid, NED-8. This set captures that moment and even features play functions inspired by the action in the scene. In order to integrate those features, the set is built on a raised platform. The simple mechanisms to power them are featured in the base of the set.

It’s actually built in two halves, which connect to create the set’s complete area. The reasoning is to allow for a strip of flaming Vintrium shards to appear across the middle of the platform. This is achieved by a plate connected to a bar of Technic elements. An elastic band then holds it. When the two plates of the platform are moved apart, the strip of transparent orange cheese slopes springs up. Another play feature is a ‘flippable’ gurney of Vintrium crystals. There’s a small hinged plate, which can be pressed to flip the yellow gurney. Well, that’s what it’s meant to do, it just doesn’t. The plate which can be flipped doesn’t have enough reach to tip over the gurney. Each half of the platform has a round plate mounted on a turntable. These can’t be turned by any other elements but just by moving the plates themselves.

Unlike similar sets, this one features four minifigures including a new version of Obi-Wan Kenobi and a completely new character in the form of humanoid loader Droid NED-8. With the series taking place between the Prequels and the Original Trilogy, Obi-Wan looks a little different from his other LEGO versions. This is captured here by a new hairpiece and this version of the character certainly needs it. Other versions of Obi-Wan haven’t fared well in the hair department. His dishevelled robes come across well with the print detail on the torso and legs. Vader is very similar to his most recently updated version. So it includes the two-part helmet, with the flesh tone scarred head underneath. The print detail in the torso has been ever so slightly tweaked and now features print on the arms.

Two new characters join Vader and Ben. Tala Durith is an Imperial Officer who realises the Empire isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. She first appears in her Imperial uniform yet when she’s in this scene she’s wearing something completely different. So her minifigure being in an Imperial outfit does seem a little odd plus the lack of hair under the Imperial Officer caps just makes her look like any other generic Imperial. Finally, one of the best minifigures in the set is the new Droid NED-8. This uses a standard minifigure body but a unique piece which sits over it creates the Droid’s bulky armoured body and head. An additional printed slope piece is attached to the back to complete the look. It’s a great little minifigure, only slightly let now by it feeling a little small, especially next to the other characters.

Review Round-up

A lot has been said about the pricing of this set and I have to agree its current price tag is quite high for what the set offers. It’s also an odd set to pinpoint where the set sits against other Star Wars sets. It’s very similar to the previous ‘duel’ scene sets such as Duel on Starkiller Base and Duel on Mustafar. Those obviously have a considerably lower price point. The inclusion of two more minifigures really doesn’t warrant an almost two-fold increase in RRP. That being said I do like that the Star Wars sets are branching out beyond the constant rehashing of older sets. The Star Wars universe has expanded vastly in recent years, which offers far more content to draw inspiration from. Unfortunately, the license and additional costs put all LEGO Star Wars sets in a tricky predicament. This isn’t a bad set, it has some great minifigures in particular the new versions of Kenobi and NED-8. It’s just let down by the pricing. Its perceived value compared to the size of the set is certainly a hard one to justify. You can pre-order the seller now, ahead of its release on August 1st.
