71399: Luigi’s Mansion Entryway Set Review

Any good mansion can’t advertise itself as being somewhat spooky without providing a suitably spooky entrance. Wrought iron gates, a large creaky door and maybe someone or something peering out the windows are some of the requirements needed to offer an unexpecting guest, a worthy fright of their life. So this mid-sized LEGO Super Mario expansion set is the perfect introduction to the ghost-filled fun awaiting you inside Luigi’s Mansion. But how does it translate Luigi’s ghosty gaming endeavour into a brick-built adventure? Find out in another 2022 set review and a closer look at the LEGO Super Mario Luigi’s Mansion Entryway Expansion.

71399: Luigi's Mansion Entryway Set Review

As the name suggests, the set recreates a creepy entrance to the Mansion, Luigi visits after winning a mysterious contest. It’s here that the Mario Brothers are last seen together before Mario disappears and Luigi is left to tackle the ghostly goings-on. This is partly built into the interactive aspect of the build. As with just about every LEGO Super Mario Expansion Sets, the entryway is built in sections which are then combined. The largest section includes a wooden door and runway, which can be moved via a splat gear behind the door. This also has a notch in which a couple of ball joints connect to the doors set. So when the runway moves, the motion also opens the doors. There’s an Action Brick on the runway and one atop the splat gear dial. Both feature sound effects connected to the door as well as giving Luigi a few fearful call-outs. If playing with both Mario and Luigi interactive figures, one can be placed on the runway and the other can sit on the splat gear, which is a nice play on both characters still being together as the game starts.

Another section to offer play functions is a pathway leading to Bogmire the purple ghost. This features a shadow ball that can be propelled at the ghost by slamming down on a hinged island plate. If timed right, the black shadow ball will topple the ghost to reveal its Action Bricks.

Bogmire isn’t the only ghost to feature in the set. The purple ghost is used by a Boo, this is similar to build to others previously found in other LEGO Super Mario sets. Plus there’s Polterpup, a friendly canine ghost who first appeared in the 3DS sequel, Luigi’s Mansion Dark Moon. Polterpup returned in the Switch threequel and was adding into the original game’s 3DS remake. Its inclusion in the set follows offers a similar action from the game. So visiting Polterpup’s Action Brick will gift you an extra heart and you can also grab a bone from the Golden Bone Action Brick.

The rest of the set includes buildable elements and connector plates which combine with the sections detailed above to create a scene leading to the interior of the Mansion, which can be found in other LEGO Super Mario Expansion Sets. These include a pair of wall sections, complete with windows, which connect to either side of the doorway. Once combined, the set offers some fun little play features as well as being a nice companion to the other Luigi’s Mansion Expansion Sets. Although I would love to see a proper Luigi’s Mansion set, similar to stand LEGO offerings, I’m more than happy to have one of my favourite games, represented in some form through the LEGO Super Mario sets.

One of the main features of every single LEGO Super Mario set, including the D2C sets, are the Action Bricks. This set includes quite a few, with both the Bogmire and Boo ghost having on. Polterpup has one on its little display plate. There’s one on the runway, either side of the door as well as also featuring a golden bone Action Brick. There’s also a Start Plate Action Brick. This kicks off a Luigi’s Mansion-themed run, complete with the iconic Luigi’s Mansion theme tune. You’ll need to add a Finish Plate from other Expansion sets. Please note LEGO Luigi and the Poltergust 3000 Power-up Suit are not included in this set.
