71396: Bowser Jr’s Clown Car Set Review

Bowser Jr made his debut in the GameCube classic, Super Mario Sunshine, where he caused mischief on Isle Defino. As the son of King Koopa, his mischievous ways are certainly inspired by Bowser. Junior made his LEGO® debut alongside LEGO Mario in the Starter Course set and now he finally has his beloved Clown Car, to help wreak havoc on the Mushroom Kingdom and beyond. The set is actually aimed at being another interactive aspect for LEGO Mario or Luigi to interact with, but there is nothing to stop Bowser Jr from taking it for a spin. So as I continue by LEGO Super Mario 2022 set reviews, it’s time to take a look at Bowser Jr’s Clown Car Expansion Set.

This expansion set is unlike any of the previous ones as it sits between the Character Packs and Power-up Suits. It’s a very small set and more connected to LEGO Mario or Luigi, than being something to integrate into a larger course. In various Mario games and spin-offs, Bowser Jr often floats around in his Clown Car. It’s less a car and more a floating craft, with is fashioned after Bowser’s much bigger version. The LEGO version of the Clown Car is a lot less round, but just as cute, with the printed tile panels choosing the cheery face rather than the evil one.

The base of the craft is built in such as way as to let it sink into its body of it when it’s placed on a flat surface. Because of the small propeller which sits under Clown Car, this feature is much needed. Inside the Clown Car is an Action Brick, once Mario or Luigi is placed upon it, a tune begins and you can float the Clown Car through the air and grab some extra coins.

As well as the Clown Car, the set also includes a Bob-omb bomb. This is the same build as previous versions featured in other Expansion sets, Character Packs and Polybags. It would have been nice to have something a little more unique, especially as the Bob-omb has appeared so much before. If nothing else this set is great to pop the buildable LEGO Bowser Jr figure in and display alongside LEGO Mario and other LEGO Super Mario characters and sets. Please note LEGO Mario, LEGO Bowser Jr and the clear stand do not are included with this set.
