60307: Wildlife Rescue Camp Set Review

For the final review of the LEGO® City Wildlife Rescue sets, it’s time to take a look at what’s technically the largest of the four boxed sets. I say technically as it’s the most expensive of the Wildlife Rescue sets but features fewer parts than the Wildlife Rescue Operation set. But what it lacks in overall parts, it more than makes up for with animal figures, play features and an appearance from another LEGO City Adventures character. The set also includes another appearance of a road plate variant, a few vehicles and a cool treetop look-out camp. So here’s a closer look at the LEGO City Wildlife Rescue Camp set.

60307: Wildlife Rescue Camp Set Review

In a similar fashion to all the Wildlife Rescue sets, there’s a mix of scenery and vehicles. With the camp leaning more towards scenery compared to vehicles. Although there are four vehicles, three of them are extremely small. They include a motorbike, a very simple glider-type aircraft and a raft. The raft in particular is quite fun as it features a few additional elements such as a motor and crate transportation area. Those crates deserve a special mention, they use a crate element with a Minifigure display base as a lid and a telephone receiver as a handle, they just look really nice.

The other vehicle is far more impressive and rather a chunky beast. It’s a sort of utility van, best described as the same style as the armoured trucks seen in US films and TV shows. Obviously, it uses the same colour scheme as other vehicles in the Wildlife Rescue range. Unfortunately, the group’s logo is applied via a sticker, which doesn’t match the colour of the elements it’s stuck on. The 8-stud wide back can be accessed by flipping up the roof and opening the rear doors, although it’s still a little difficult to get to the stuff inside. I really like how robust-looking this truck is, it’s only let down by mismatched stickers.

The animals’ habitats are split across the two pieces of scenery. The first is a large tree with a cave at its roots and a rocky outcrop. This gives it a sort of Lion King Pride Rock vibe. Much of the cave section is crafted from a BURP piece. As you head to the top of the tree, you’ll find a simple nest, where the eagle is tending to a lone egg. Much of the tree’s trunk is made up of unique sections which haven’t been featured in many other sets.

The treetop research lookout is the largest section of the set. It’s centred around one of the new road plates, which I guess should be called surface plates since they have expanded beyond just roads. The one included here is blue to represent a section of water. To the left of the river is a small tree trunk, which is topped with a crane. On the opposite side is a much taller tree, this is topped with a cool little lookout platform. The canopy is created from a unique material piece, which fixes to four angled posts. Both trees are connected with a ladder element.

As a larger set, the Wildlife Rescue Camp includes 6 Minifigures one of which is a character from the animated LEGO City Adventures TV show. Sleek is a nature documentarian, who has appeared in a couple of episodes but no other LEGO sets. Although a unique character, he’s made up of fairly generic parts. The rest of the Wildlife Rescue team includes two rescue workers, an explorer, a pilot and a vet.

If you’re only here for the animals then you’ll be pleased to know this set contains the most of them. The largest of the animals is an elephant and although you’ll also find one Wildlife Rescue Operation set, this one is a male elephant. The parts used are the same but it uses longer elements for the tusks.

The set also includes a pride of lions made up of two adult cats and a pair of cubs. The lioness first appeared in the Safari Off-roader set from last and her equivalent coloured cub also appeared in the Wildlife Rescue 4+ set. But the other cub and her dad are unique to this set and uniquely coloured as well. Both are white in colour, with the adult male lion having an unusual mix of white ‘fur’ and a brick yellow mane. They certainly aren’t the traditional mix of colours you’d expect to see on a lion.

Monkeys are the most prolific of the new animals to be featured across the Wildlife Rescue sets. There are two found in this set but they are a different colour compared to the rest. This of course makes them unique to this set. The final animal is another recoloured piece. The eagle was first featured in the Outdoor Adventures People Pack from 2018. Although the version here uses the same mould, it features different print details. Once making it unique to this set. So of the 8 animals found in this set 5 are unique, whilst the elephant features a slight variation.

60307: Wildlife Rescue Camp Set Review

As mentioned in my previous Wildlife Rescue set review, some of the more recent LEGO City sets have offered a different build experience and format compared to previous sets. This works particularly well for these sets, not having to have a building as a focal point is perfectly suited to a set based on an outdoor environment. The various vehicles still link back to the more traditional approach to LEGO City sets. It’s the new LEGO animals that are the real stars of this and indeed all the Wildlife Rescue sets. They have been integrated into the overall experience quite well, it’s just a shame they are featured in such pricey sets. More so considering it’s unlikely they would be appearing in other sets or themes anytime soon.
