60253: LEGO City Ice-Cream Truck Set Review

There is something about LEGO® food trucks which delight builders. Not entirely sure why, maybe it’s because they offer something different from usual police and fire based sets. Whatever it is, us LEGO builders do enjoy a good old food based vehicle. Which could be why this particular set gained a lot of attention why it was revealed a few weeks ago. The Ice-Cream Truck brings the joy of van-based frozen treats to LEGO City for the first time. As I continue to take a look at some of the new LEGO sets being released on Boxing Day and in the new year. Listen out for the jolly tune as review set 60253: Ice-Cream Truck.

The Build

The build is based on a more modern type of vehicle, which is a little similar to the last LEGO City food truck, the Pizza Van. As with most LEGO vehicles, the builds begins with the base of van. What is a little usual about this build is how you access the inside of it. Many LEGO vehicles have removable roof, which let you get into the small space inside. However the Ice-Cream Truck has a hinged wall panel. This is on the ‘rear’ side of the van. On the other side is a neat little sliding panel, exactly like you find on a real Ice Cream Truck. Inside the van is a till, ice cream machine and freezer boxes for delicious ice lollies.

The blue, white, red and yellow colour scheme works nicely and is lifted by the various graphics dotted around the van. All of these are achieved with stickers. Which I don’t mind in a set like this. There are Mr Chill logos around the top of the van’s roof, the cheesy slogans around the base of the truck and those all important menus on the windows. One cool little thing on these is the ice creams shown match those in the set. There’s also a Mind That Child sign on the back window of the van.

One of the sets most fun elements is the grinning ice lolly character Mr Chill. He’s a cool looking ice lolly with a face, so cool in fact he’s wearing shades to enforce his coolness. A combination of brown elements on the top of the lolly and stickers, give the impression of a chocolate hairdo, slowly melting down his face. He may be cool, but a few minutes in the sun will soon change that. Mr Chill is partly main using 4×4 wall brick, he’s also mounted on an hinge so he’s sitting on a jaunty angle.

The Minifigures

The set features two Minifigures – a male, skateboarding customer and female Ice Cream vendor. Neither of the Minifigures are exclusive but they fun additions to the set. The both have single faces, with the customer having both a hairpiece and a helmet. He also includes a funky purple skateboard. Of the two, I like the Ice Cream vendor Minifigure the most, her stripy outfit fits nicely with the colour scheme of the vehicle. They are joined by a German Shepherd-type dog figure. It’s a shame this older LEGO dog breed wasn’t switched out for one of the newer pooches.

Overall

I rather like this little set, as mentioned above, it’s always nice to see LEGO City sets which offer something beyond the almost constant stream of police and fire sets. There are a fair few stickers but they really add to the fun of the set, I especially like how they match up with the actual ice cream elements inside the van. It’s nice to have a LEGO City Ice-Cream truck, the last LEGO one we had was part of the first LEGO Movie sets. The LEGO City Ice-Cream Truck will arrive in stores on December 26th. Stay tuned for more 2020 set reviews over the festive period.
