40566: Ray The Castaway LEGO Ideas GWP Review

Along with transforming fan creations into LEGO® sets, LEGO Ideas has also tapped the creative keg of fans to help with a number of smaller promotional sets. In recent times fan creations have been the basis of four GWP sets. These have included the Space Rocket Ride, Sailboat Adventure, Vintage Car and most recently Cosmic Cardboard Adventures. They will soon be joined by a fifth set and the second Ideas-themed GWP to be released this year. Ahead of its availability from October 1st, here’s a look at the LEGO Ideas Ray the Castaway GWP set.

Back in April 2021, LEGO Ideas ran a contest to find a coastal-themed set which would become a future GWP set. After a number of entries were whittled down to 15 projects, people could vote for their favourite. The winning entry came from Dadwinsit and their build, Ray the Castaway. Oddly, the box doesn’t feature any LEGO Ideas branding. It follows the same box design as recent Ideas sets and there’s a brief focus on the fan designers in the instructions but apart from that, there’s no connection to the overall Ideas theme.

Ray The Castaway Fan Design

Of all the sets created through LEGO Ideas, this has to be the one which is almost identical to the original fan creation. As you can see from the image above, very little has been changed. The set features a small desert island upon which Ray has been shipwrecked for a while. During his time on the island, he’s crafted a small hut, along with a raft and fashioned an S.O.S sign should an aircraft pass overhead.

It’s a fun little set, with a couple of great use of parts to add unique details. The palm trees are interesting as they have the new multiple stem flower elements under each leaf, giving them extra texture. The S.O.S message is also clever, using two snake decorations often found in the NINJAGO sets as S’s and a lifesaver ring for the O.

The minifigure of Ray looks suitability dishevelled, although his face looks far too angry as it uses a previously available head. I suppose if you were stranded on an island in the middle of the seas, you’d be quite angry.
