If you watched the Designer Video for the new LEGO® adidas Originals Superstar Buildable Trainer, you will have glimpsed a mini adidas shoe alongside a funky looking Minifigure. Well, that set is an upcoming gift with purchase, which will unsurprisingly be released along with the other adidas set on July 1st. So ahead of its release, here’s a closer look at set 40486: adidas Originals Superstar minibuild.

Free Set: 40486: adidas Originals Superstar | Pieces: 96 | Spend Limit: £95/$85/95€ | Duration: July 1st – July 25th
Although the set is branded in a similar fashion to the adidas set and released at the same time, you don’t actually have to buy the upcoming adidas set to get it. Instead, it is available with various spend amounts.
The packaging isn’t as cool as the shoebox seen with set 10282 but it does have similar graphics. Inside are a couple of bags of elements, a sticker sheet and the instructions. You’ll notice from the images that the Minifigure and the shoe both feature stickered elements. Although we’ve come to expect stickers in sets, I must admit the one on the Minifigures is disappointing.
Focusing on the Minifigure, it uses the 2×3 brick suit introduced in the Collectible Minifigure range. A 2×3 tile is added, complete with a sticker, to give the appearance of an adidas shoebox. The head used is the classic and simply smiley face, I assume this is to tie it into the ‘original’ nature of the shoe. The Minifigure’s look is finished off with a white baseball cap, mic and boombox. It’s an odd mix and results in a unique character, it’s just a shame a sticker has been used for the ‘box’ and I’m not sure the classic face fits with the overall look of the character.
Joining the Minifigure is a tiny shoe. Although it’s called an adidas Originals Superstar shoe, it doesn’t really match any particular design. It does feature a couple of iconic traits. These include the domed shell cap, three stripes and the golden adidas badge. That badge is another use of stickers and looks OK. Oddly the stripes running along each side of the shoe are printed. Ironically, these would have been better as stickers, as the white print is a little washed out due to being layered on a dark background.
It’s a funky little set, but there are a few issues with it, namely, the printed pieces would have been better stickered and the stickered pieces would have been better printed. The classic face doesn’t seem to fit with the overall look of the Minifigure and the spend threshold is quite steep, especially as the set it’s promoting is much lower.
