One of the free LEGO® goodies, you’ll be able to get during this year’s VIP Weekend and Black Friday events is the festive-themed set called Santa’s Front Yard. This little scenic set is unlike any of the previous year’s Christmas-themed sets and includes a snowy scene complete with snow-frosted trees, an Elf Minifigure and a brick-built reindeer. Ahead of its availability next weekend, here’s an early peek at set 40484: Santa’s Front Yard.

As mentioned above this year’s Limited Edition Christmas set doesn’t follow any other seasonal set released this year. In fact, it has more similarities to the LEGO Star Wars microscale scenes. So it’s basically a section of land and background, built across an “L’ shape surface. The foreground of the scene features snow-covered ground, split with an icy stream. This has a nice texture to it, thanks to the layering of elements. The ground section also features two 3D trees and a little North Pole sign, which unfortunately uses a sticker. These lead to a much darker background, where you’ll find a couple more trees but these use a darker green and are 2D. With each of them partly built into the backdrop. As well as the trees, towards the top of this section, you’ll find a mix of 1×1 studs, a 2×2 round tile and strips of stickers to recreate a festive star-filled night sky. It has a nice Christmas card scene feel to it.
In all honestly, it has little to do with being Santa’s front yard, there’s no fencing or any other such garden-related paraphernalia. So I guess the connection to old Saint Nick is one of his elves and a Reindeer. The Elf Minifigure is different to past versions and actually very similar to the Elf Minifigure Keychain. So it has a red coloured elf hat instead of green, the torso is the same as the elves from the Winter Village Elf Clubhouse set and it’s finished with short red legs. This happy little chap is joined by a brick-built Reindeer. It’s a nice take on a Reindeer, it just feels a little like a polybag build, which nicely leads on to my next point.
The glaring element of the set which could be improved is the Reindeer. Prior to the introduction of the Reindeer figure in last year’s Winter Village set, they were always portrayed by brick-built creatures. But the Reindeer figure has spoilt us and now anything other than one of those in a set feels like a missed opportunity. As you can see below, switching out the brick-built Reindeer for the figure style makes the set look even better. Obviously, there is a ‘costing’ amount related to GWP sets and a moulded Reindeer may not have suited that but it’s a shame it wasn’t included in the set, especially if the spend limit is over £170!
